So, what do we mean by “forgotten science”?

First off, a lot of different people have tried to define what science is. One of the most famous examples is some dude Francis Bacon, who in The Novum Organum, came up with a bunch of rules of how science should be conducted. These formed the basis of the modern scientific method.

But then some guy called Paul Feyerabend came along and said: Screw you and your close-minded science. Paul hated the rigid exclusionary structure of science and shouted:

ANARCHY!

Everything is science and anyone can produce knowledge.

To this day, people still debate the nature of science. People even talk about how we talk about science in the media and the news. What was considered radically scientific 200 years ago is just how we see the world now. They didn’t even know DNA existed, but now we accept it as a fact of life.

Here we’re trying to highlight the subtle changes from the super scientific to the everyday. As a wise man once said: we stand upon the shoulders of giants. If the systems we rely on now went down tomorrow, would we even know how to build them back up? Take this website for instance. A few decades ago, anyone who wanted their own website had to code it themselves from scratch. Nowadays most people use website services that do all the work for you.

Do you even know what HTML is?

Okay you do? Anyway,

Our project on these internet-based technologies is just small piece of the puzzle. We want you to start thinking more deeply about how science fits into your daily life. Think about agriculture, cooking, and your daily commute. These all rely on complex science, technology and engineering. Would you be able to build a whole toaster from scratch?

It’s okay. We don’t know how to either. It’s complicated.
